MIME Type Lookup

Runs locally in your browser. Your input is not uploaded.Free, no sign-up

Loading the MIME database…

Find the MIME type for a file extension, or the extensions for a MIME type.

How to use the MIME Type Lookup

  1. Type an extension (.png), a file name (report.xlsx) or a MIME type (application/json). Use image/* to list a family.
  2. Copy the type, the ready-made Content-Type header, or Spring's MediaType constant.

Why the MIME type matters

  • Browsers decide what to do with a response from its Content-Type, not its file name: render it, run it, play it or download it.
  • With X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff a wrong type blocks scripts and styles outright, so an incorrect type on a .js or .css file breaks the page.
  • Text types should state a charset (charset=utf-8), or non-ASCII characters may be garbled.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the data come from?

From mime-db, which combines the IANA registry with the types Apache and nginx ship. It's what Node's express and the mime-types package use. When several types claim an extension, the IANA one wins.

What should I use for unknown files?

application/octet-stream: browsers download it rather than guess, which is also the safe choice for user uploads.
