Password Generator

Runs locally in your browser. Your input is not uploaded.Free, no sign-up
Very strong130 bits

Time to guess at 10 billion guesses a second: longer than the age of the universe.

  • Generating…

Generate strong random passwords locally. Nothing is sent over the network.

How to use the Password Generator

  1. Choose Random characters or a Passphrase of random words.
  2. Set the length and characters, and watch the strength estimate.
  3. Copy a password, or click Generate for new ones.

How the passwords are made

With your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source password managers use. Every character or word is equally likely: values that would favor some characters are thrown away rather than wrapped around. Nothing is sent over the network or stored.

Passwords or passphrases?

  • Random characters pack the most strength into the fewest characters; best stored in a password manager.
  • Passphrases like crumpet-oblong-pacifier-unwind-scorch-glitter are easier to type and remember. Six words from the 7,776-word EFF list give about 78 bits.

Frequently asked questions

How is strength calculated?

As entropy: the number of equally likely possibilities for these settings, in bits. The crack time assumes an attacker who knows your settings and tries 10 billion guesses a second offline, and finds it after trying half of them.

Where does the word list come from?

The EFF large word list by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (CC BY 3.0 US), made of common, easily typed words.
