What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp (or epoch time) counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC. It doesn't depend on time zones, which makes it the standard way to store and exchange points in time in databases, logs, APIs and JWTs (the iat and exp claims).

• Seconds (10 digits today, e.g. 1700000000): Unix, PHP, Python's time.time(), JWTs
• Milliseconds (13 digits, e.g. 1700000000000): JavaScript's Date.now(), Java's System.currentTimeMillis()
• Microseconds and nanoseconds (16 and 19 digits): PostgreSQL, Go, and many logging and tracing systems

Frequently asked questions

How does it know if my timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

By size. Values below 100 billion are treated as seconds (that covers dates up to the year 5138), below 100 trillion as milliseconds, and so on. The detected unit is shown above the results.

What is the year 2038 problem?

Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC (2147483647). Modern systems use 64-bit values and aren't affected.

Does it handle time zones and daylight saving time?

Yes. Conversions use your browser's time zone database, so offsets and daylight saving changes are correct for any date and zone.

Is my data sent anywhere?
