How to use the hash generator
- Choose Text to hash what you type, or File to hash a file of any size.
- MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA3-256 and SHA3-512 are calculated at once.
- Pick hex, uppercase hex or Base64 output, and copy any hash with one click.
- To verify a download, paste the published checksum into Compare. The matching algorithm is highlighted.
Which hash should I use?
- SHA-256 is the default choice for checksums, signatures, content addressing and integrity checks.
- SHA-384 and SHA-512 give a larger output and are often faster on 64-bit machines.
- SHA3-256 and SHA3-512 use a different internal design (Keccak), useful where diversity from SHA-2 matters.
- MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security: attackers can create collisions. Use them only to match legacy checksums, never for signatures, certificates or passwords.
For passwords, use none of these. General-purpose hashes are designed to be fast, which makes passwords easy to brute-force. Use a password hashing function such as Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text or file uploaded?
No. Hashing runs entirely in your browser. Files are read locally in chunks, so even very large files never leave your computer.
Why doesn't my hash match the one from the command line?
Text is hashed as UTF-8 exactly as typed. echo "text" | sha256sum adds a trailing newline, which changes the hash. Use echo -n or printf instead. Line endings (Windows CRLF vs LF) also change the result.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. Hash functions are one-way. Short or common inputs can still be guessed by trying many candidates, which is why passwords need a dedicated password hashing function.
